Terms of service
The rules for using Learn To Fly, in plain English. By creating an account or subscribing, you agree to them.
Who we are
Learn To Fly is run by Bradley Fowler, a sole trader in the United Kingdom (“we”, “us”). You can reach us at bradley.fowler123@gmail.com, and we aim to reply within a few working days.
What Learn To Fly is, and isn't
Learn To Fly is a study aid for the UK PPL and US private pilot theory exams: lessons, practice questions and progress tracking. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the CAA, EASA or the FAA.
- It is for exam study only. It is not a substitute for approved training, your flying school or instructor, or the official publications (such as the Air Navigation Order, the UK AIP, the FAR/AIM and the FAA handbooks), which always take priority.
- Never use it to plan or fly a real flight. Charts, frequencies, forecasts and aircraft data in lessons and questions are examples, may be simplified and may be out of date. Use current official sources and your instructor's guidance for every flight.
- We work hard to keep it accurate and up to date, but rules change and mistakes happen. If you spot one, please tell us through the feedback board or by email.
- We can't promise that you will pass an exam.
Your account
- Give a real email address and keep your password to yourself.
- An account is for one person. Don't share it or resell access.
- You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. If you are under 18, please ask a parent or guardian before subscribing to Premium; they will need to make or agree to the payment.
- You can delete your account at any time by emailing us from the address on your account. Cancel any active subscription first (see below).
Free and Premium
A free account includes Air Law (UK) and FAA Regulations (US) in full, plus the first lesson of every other subject and its questions. Premium unlocks every lesson and question on both exam tracks for as long as your subscription is active.
Subscriptions and payment
- Our order process is conducted by our online reseller Paddle.com. Paddle.com is the Merchant of Record for all our orders. Paddle provides all customer service inquiries and handles returns. Paddle takes the payment, charges any VAT or sales tax and sends your receipts, and Paddle's buyer terms apply to your purchase alongside these terms.
- Premium is a subscription, billed monthly or yearly in advance. It renews automatically at the end of each period, at the same price unless we have told you about a change, until you cancel.
- The price is shown before you pay: £5 a month or £40 a year in the UK, VAT included; $5 a month or $40 a year in the US, plus any sales tax. Other countries see the price in their local currency at checkout, with any tax. If we change the price, we will tell you by email at least 30 days before it applies to your next renewal, so you can cancel first.
- If a payment fails, Paddle will retry it and email you. Premium stays on for 7 days while you update your payment method, then switches off until payment succeeds.
Cancelling and refunds
Cancel any time in the app from Profile → Plan and billing → Cancel subscription, through the link in your Paddle receipt, at paddle.net, or by emailing us. You keep Premium until the end of the period you have already paid for and won't be charged again.
Payments are not refundable, except where the law requires it or Paddle grants a refund under its refund policy, which applies to your purchase and takes precedence where it differs from ours. Premium starts as soon as you subscribe: at checkout you give your express consent to immediate access and acknowledge that this ends the 14-day right to cancel that UK and EU consumers otherwise have. Your rights if Premium is faulty (below) are not affected. See the refund policy.
Your rights if something goes wrong
If you are a consumer, the law gives you rights when digital content is faulty, not as described or not fit for purpose. For example, in the UK you can ask us to fix it, or for some or all of your money back if we can't. Nothing in these terms takes those rights away. Tell us about a problem by email and we will put it right as quickly as we can.
Acceptable use
- Don't copy, scrape, download in bulk, republish or sell the lessons or questions.
- Don't try to get around the paywall, break or overload the site, or access other people's accounts or data.
- In anything you post, don't be abusive or harass anyone, don't post anything unlawful, misleading, spam or advertising, don't share anyone's personal details, and only post material you have the right to share. Don't paste in copyrighted material such as question banks from other providers.
We may suspend or close an account that seriously or repeatedly breaks these rules, usually after a warning. If we close a paid account without good reason, we will refund the unused part of your subscription.
Feedback and posts
Signed-in users can post suggestions, corrections and comments on the feedback board. Posts and comments are visible to other signed-in users, along with your display name (your username, or a name like “Pilot 1234” if you haven't set one). Don't use your real name as your username unless you are happy for others to see it.
- You keep ownership of what you post. You give us a free, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to display, store, edit for length or clarity, and use it to run and improve Learn To Fly, including correcting or adding lessons and questions based on your suggestions.
- We may hide, edit, merge or remove posts, for example duplicates, off-topic posts or anything that breaks these terms. We don't check every post before it appears.
- You can edit or delete your own post or comment for 30 minutes after posting. After that, email us and we will remove it.
- To report a post, or anything on the site that you think is unlawful or infringes your rights, email bradley.fowler123@gmail.com with a link to it and the reason. We will look at it promptly and take it down where appropriate.
Content and ownership
The original lessons, questions, design and software are ours, and some lessons and questions are used under licence from their authors, including PPL Tutor (ppltutor.com). Some images and charts belong to third parties and are credited where they appear, for example Wikimedia Commons images under Creative Commons licences, Crown copyright material from the Met Office, and aerodrome charts and aircraft manual extracts reproduced for study. We don't claim ownership of third-party material: it remains subject to its owner's rights and licence terms, which may give you more freedom to reuse it than these terms do.
Your account gives you a personal, non-transferable right to use the content for your own study for as long as you have access. If you are a rights holder and believe something here shouldn't be, please email us and we will deal with it quickly.
Availability and changes
We aim to keep Learn To Fly running and accurate, but it may sometimes be unavailable, and we may update, add or remove content, for example when the syllabus or regulations change. We won't make changes that significantly reduce what Premium includes without telling you first; if that happens, you can cancel and get a refund for the unused part. If we ever stop offering Premium, we will refund the unused part of any subscription.
Our liability
Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that can't be limited or excluded by law, and nothing affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Subject to that:
- We are responsible for losses you suffer that are a foreseeable result of us breaking these terms or failing to use reasonable care and skill. We aren't responsible for losses that were not foreseeable.
- Learn To Fly is for private study, so we aren't liable for business losses, or for exam results, training costs or decisions about real flights, which remain the responsibility of you, your instructor and the pilot in command.
- Our total liability to you is limited to the greater of what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim and £50.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms, for example when the law or the service changes. If a change matters, we will tell you by email or in the app at least 30 days before it takes effect. If you don't agree, you can cancel before then and we will refund any unused part of a subscription; continuing to use Learn To Fly after that means you accept the new terms.
Complaints and law
If you have a complaint, please email us first and we will try to resolve it. These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales can hear disputes. If you live in Scotland, Northern Ireland or another country, you can also bring a claim in your local courts, and you keep any protection that the consumer laws of the country where you live give you.
